Getting Twisted Insane (article by Jhantu Randall)

Back in February I had bought tickets to a show being headlined by San Diego native, Twisted Insane. I’ve always been a fan of double time rhymers, choppers, and any quick cadence in-between. Being a listener of groups like Do or Die or artists like Twista, I was always impressed by the speed in which they flowed. From there I was drawn to Tech N9ne which I bring up for a couple of reasons, first off being given the opportunity to get in to cover that show by Lezerrick Holiday of 03 Ent. lead to the platforms I now have. In addition to that, it was through Tech N9ne’s song “World Wide Choppers” that I was first introduced to the sound of Twisted Insane, and with 03 Entertainment and Yahhh Music, started by Tazz Jones and Fasa Labree promoting and performing, this article feels as if something has come full circle.

Every once in a while, a rare individual arises on the landscape who exudes an exceptional level of artistic achievement and integrity. That individual is an artist who sets the pace, and whose name and work are synonymous with the term, “Renaissance.” Such an artist is Los Angeles-based designer, musician, rapper, singer and producer Rippy Austin, a “Renaissance Man” in the truest sense. Rippy is a 23-year-old artist who is passionate about creating music that is true to who he is.

"Facetious" by 5ve album review (written by Jhantu Randall)

The word “Facetious” is defined as the act of treating serious issues with deliberate inappropriate humor, so I can see where it can strike a rather visceral reaction. It’s this particular trait that I happen to enjoy in music if the artist is able to do it correctly without coming off as condescending or just down right mean. Rappers such as Redman, Ludacris and even early Eminem come to mind when it comes to having this quality and giving it a mass appeal. Needless to say, I was sent the link to an album with the name Facetious by 5ve & Gadjet.

With an album carrying that name my expectations were to be humored, possibly offended and entertained overall. The title track kicks off with a good energy as 5ve’s verses show a comfortable delivery coupled with a few punchlines that are worth a playback. The song “Strange Ways” almost comes off as a satirical spin on modernizing doo-wop in it’s chorus as 5ve states: “It's nice to meet you, hello my name's Quinn, I'm here …

Clouds is a 27 track instrumental project from Detroit producer Apollo Brown (The Reset, Brown Study, Gas Mask). While most have come to know Apollo's production for its smash mouth, head nodding, grime, Clouds reveals another aspect of his production ability. This complex, mello instrumental album is ideal on a winter afternoon, or as a nightcap to the day. Each track is hypnotic and imaginative. Clouds is a 52 minute instrumental ride, a backdrop for reflection.

For some, clouds come to mind when pondering over the definition of being lost in thought. Formed in different sizes, shapes, and colors, set high in the sky or hanging low at arms reach, clouds seem to stir up a type of calm that we all need at times. This album is a collection of instrumentals put together to do just that. Whether to meditate on a certain mood within, or to accompany heavy reflection, Clouds puts forth music to provoke thought.
